Can anyone advise if it's safe for a woman to backpack through Cambodia & Viet Nam alone?

My friend may have to bail on our Southeast Asia backing packing trip from Hanoi to Siem Reap. While it's advised that women should use caution at night, are there any other issues or concerns for a woman traveling alone? Are we easier targets for traveling and tour scams? If not those countries, any that are better. Thailand has been thrown about...Can anyone advise if it's safe for a woman to backpack through Cambodia %26amp; Viet Nam alone?
Enough horror stories from people who haven't left their own hometowns! I have never been to Cambodia, I live in Vietnam.

First of all, as an American woman , you probably outweigh the average Vietnamese male by 15 kilos. You could definitely kick their butt if you wanted. However, most Viet males will be too shy to talk to you.

Secondly, the Viets are EXTREMELY friendly people. They might steal from you (they figure that you're from America, you're a millionaire and can afford it), but they would never harm you.

Thirdly, use caution at night. The Vietnamese are THE WORLD'S WORST DRIVERS!!! (I'm a former Marine and I've been to over 50 countries) It must be a genetic thing. Carry a lantern or reflector if you are walking down an unlit street at night. Even then, it is advisable to walk against the direction of traffic so you can dodge the people who inadvertently want to kill you by being such p i s s poor drivers. lol

If you come to Ben Tre, email me and you can stay at our house. Vietnam is very friendly and VERY safe for tourists.

As the poster above pointed out, you're much more likely to come to harm in America than Viet Nam.Can anyone advise if it's safe for a woman to backpack through Cambodia %26amp; Viet Nam alone?
please consider the fact that all of them are third world countries, definitely not modeled after ANY of the western democracies, poverty-level is high, the role and respect of women much worse than in developed countries, for ANY dubious character you would seem an easy target for a near-perfect crime...bottom line...do NOT think with your western-trained mind..there IS considerable crime in our country, where living standards are high...you have to multiply our crime rate by a factor of 6/8/10 because of their poverty level.

i would not do it, even with a friend...
i certainly would not advise a woman backpacking and traveling alone to go through Cambodia or Viet Nam, as these are very poor country's, you would be an easier target, as you would not be accompanied, or in a group, this would make you a far easier target, i don't know of any other country that would be any better over there.
Andras...

By your definition we would then include the US as being un safe to travel in alone....and its most likely true...

To the OP....I would reconsider travelling alone as a tourist in just about any country in the world....not just Cambodia and Vietnam
sorry i dont have time to give a huge explanation but if you look on google there will be many cautions and tips for what you should watch out for in these countries.

my advice: dont EVER be alone in a country you are not familiar with. most likely something bad WILL happen.

PLEASE be careful and learn about this topic before you/your friend go, and dont go alone- maybe you could go with your friend if you are interested? =) good luck.
Well actually it all depends if you go in the right time. If you go and act all rich and stuff then that will make theives want to come after you, another thing is the people that you meet with, are they someone fimilar that people refer you to or is it people that you are not sure of. Another thing is that some people that live there are pretty nice and wouldn't harm anyone, but just be carefull.
It may not be safe, even if you are at tourist locations, because of the poverty which drives people to do extreme things even cutting off your hand for a watch...
Having spent time in Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Thailand I can tell you that you should reconsider.
