I have to risk insulting your car knowledge, but...
If the heater control is set on Defrost, or any combination including Defrost, your A/C compressor will run. That's normal. And if the temp controls are set to Cold, it will BE Air Conditioned air coming out of whatever vents (again, with the controls set to Def in any combination).
Your garage should know this, as it is nothing new or unique.
Do you mean that the A/C comes on when it's turned completely off? There is, by the way, a test to diagnose only the HVAC systems in Chrysler vehicles. what is the problem? control head shuts off, blower motor quits, lack of airlow?
if the whole control head is shutting down including the rear defrost i would have to agree the most likely cause would be the control head. it is not unlikely or uncommon.
