First, if this is your first venture into the ';joys'; of owning your own business, I would strongly recommend talking to the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) about your business plan. You'll also want to have a lawyer look over the documents, but start with the SBA and SCORE, as they are both a lot of help and free.
Next, talk to some current franchise holders of the company that you're investigating. This shouldn't be a problem, as most franchises have dedicated territories for each franchise holder. Don't ask the company for these names. Find a phone book and pick your own.
Ask how well the company supports them with supplies, advertising and training. one thing that is common, if you are leasing a name or becoming a franchise, you have to abide by there minimal standards or face breach of contract or even criminal charges for not upholding the image of the name. i would first look into what i am interested in putting my name on, then find out what they have to offer and what is required from them individually.
