when do I start my garden in newyorkFirst time planting tomatos N cherry tomatos N vegies need advise I already bought the soil I live in newyork?
Tomatoes and cherry tomatoes you can start inside right now. You can use small containers or egg cartons with half egg shells. Poke a hole in the egg shell bottom for water drainage. Use sterilized starting soil (you can use regular potting soil but sometimes because it's not sterile the seeds won't germinate), plant one seed in each egg shell. Water so soil is damp. Put in a sunny window. Watch to make sure the soil doesn't dry out everyday. When they sprout, get some fish emulsion fertilizer and fertilize them. When they get about 4 inches high, transplant carefully each little plant into regular soil in a larger pot with the egg shell only crack it a little so the roots can grow through. When the weather gets nicer, transplant again into the garden or if you are growing them on a porch, into bigger containers. Add epsom salts, an iron nail, more fish fertilizer. Keep watered. Other veggies are different depend on veggie. Lots of information online.First time planting tomatos N cherry tomatos N vegies need advise I already bought the soil I live in newyork?
You do not plant tomatoes outside AT ALL untill the nightime low temperature is no less than 50 degrees...If you do the tomatoes go into a nightime mode during the day thus messing up the photosynthesis and you will only obtain about a 25% harvest of the plants full potential...If you are planting from seed, they should already be planted..you start the seed indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost..it is a little late for that now there, especially when your growing season is short in new york....You can buy settings already started though about 3 dollars for 9 plants...I am in Florida where I start mine indoors..I just planted mine outside laasst week for the temperature at nights have finally reached above 50 degrees..do not buy any settings yet if your temperatures have not reached this point, for they as well have set in the garden centers growing under the 50 degree mark..so they will not fruit out as well either..wait for the next new batch that comes into the garden center once your temperature has reached its right temp...Also get indeterminate tomatoes and not determinate..determinate are made for peopel that can and freeze them..Determinate produces all of it's fruit at one time and they all ripen at once..we use them for canning and making sauces to freeze..they die for the season once they do this..indeterminate fruit out and ripen a few at a time and grow all season untill frost sets in..below are some links, as well as pictures of my seedlings indoors, and garden outdoors backing up my info here..I suggest ';husky cherry reds'; for a good crop of tomatoes that fruit all season..they are indeterminate..most labels on the plants tell you if the variety of tomatoe is determinate or indeterminate...
determinate and indeterminate tomatoes..

Also do not water tomatoes every day..alot do this and end up getting ';blossom drop';..Tomatoes here I water only once a week,,and twice a week in real hot weather..I am in Florida...You water tomatoes just when you see the leaves to begin to slightly curl..I do water freshly planted tomatoes every day for about a week then I back off on the water..

In April, I live in Ohio. Although, I have a little portable greenhouse and I'm starting my seedlings tomarrow. Cold nights I'll roll it inside, back out in the morning until it's above freezing every night.
A tip, I plant my stuff in old ice cube trays, once well established, they come right out like greenhouse plugs, then they're super easy to transfer into your tilled garden by the middle/end of May
Here's exactly what I have and it's great, but when outside, I use a bungee cord to strap it on my porch so the wind doesn't take it over. It's a little over 5 foot assembled, and worth the time. I bought mine from Walmart.com last year, same thing though, can be found cheaper with a lttle search involved. Hope this helps.

I'll try to answer your last question first. Look in the yellow pages for a greenhouse near where you live. These people are about to become your best friends. They will advise you about the best planting time for tomatoes in your area.
Now the tough question! You have a great number of choices when it comes to what cherry tomatoes to plant. I have found Sweet millions ( a red cherry tomato) is a heavy yielder and great to eat right off the vine or in salads. Ask your greenhouse about the yellow type as well. They are a bit milder and somewhat sweeter.
Vegetables will depend on how much space you have and on your personal tastes.
I hope this helps.
