Is there any advice? What should I advise to my 9th grader (niece) to improve her essay writing?
Have her set up an appointment with the teacher to go over the paper and see why she was marked down. If she is able to understand how the teacher grades and what she is looking for, it might help her in future writing assignments.

If this doesn't work, make sure your niece's essays have a logical flow, are concise but use a sophisticated voice. Make sure she fully answers the prompt and if it is a formal essay, avoid first person pronouns.

Hope this helps! What should I advise to my 9th grader (niece) to improve her essay writing?
There is a program I use exclusively in my 6th grade class. It is called The Write Tools. It is a very simple program and fits any writer (It is used in Kindergarten all the way through many masters programs)

In 5 months I have seen astounding growth, even in kids who can barely read or write. I have a kid who reads at a first grade level. He just passed the 6th grade writing test.
Well, first of all, don't allow her to place the blame entirely on the teacher. In the end, she's the one writing the essays, and so she holds most of the responsibility for her grade! So the first thing I would tell her to do is to try to ask her teacher for suggestions about how to improve her writing. He or she should be able to at least give her some general ideas based off of the work that she has already handed in.

From there, I would consider buying her a grammar textbook, dictionary, and thesaurus to have on hand as reference materials. Show her how to use these books to look up information if she has any questions about word choice, context, spelling and sentence structure. I would also encourage her to read. Generally, the more students read, the better their writing becomes, as they learn new words and see different ways of structuring paragraphs and essays. Combining the two, there are several books out there on writing style, and how to write more effective essays and research papers. Some of them are even quite entertaining reads, as well as being good resources to look at when it comes time to write the next paper.

Last but not least, the best way to learn better writing is to practice writing. Suggest that she begins keeping a journal of everyday events or thoughts. She could even write fiction if so inclined. Throughout this process she should try to write as clearly, concisely, and cogently as possible. This will eventually help her to quickly and logically write down her ideas.
